What is a "truck"?
I have this argument with my wife about my Land Cruiser. I call it a truck (ladder frame, body on frame, solid axles, transfer case, etc) but she insists it isn't because its not a pickup truck.
Probably just semantics, but I sure could use some help with this one, I mean if she wont listen to me, surely she will listen to the internet right? So what do you think qualifies a "truck"? Here is my list
Ladder frame (can be integrated)
Axles meant for heavy load
Spring rates that are meant to carry weight outside of passengers and their cargo
utility grade hubs, brakes and transmission
Engines and systems meant for Utility (High torque, strengthened over a passenger vehicle engine, increased fluid and heat capacity)
In short, something that can do a little work.
Have a unimog train for your troubles.

I consider a truck to be something with an area to load cargo into.

can it be a covered area?

How long have you been married? A truck is whatever your wife says it is...

well the vote is 1.5: 1, since I have my 2 year old on my side, so according to my math...we're winning.

I probably should have included "specifically intended to load cargo into". Well, if you take big trucks as an example they have flatbeds, like a regular pickup. And they have van body trailers which are enclosed and/or refrigerated. Tough call as to how you interpret the word.

According to my maths, you're getting the silent treatment, maybe cold dinner. Probably not the couch unless you really push it...

well in terms of cargo, I am rated to carry 1620 lbs, which is 100 lbs more than the current Tacoma, so even though its covered, I would argue that it was designed to carry a load.

I think I should clarify that my vote is the .5, my daughters opinion on the matter carries much more weight than mine.

I've always considered trucks to be any vehicle with utility in mind that can tow or haul a decent amount and/or go off road with little to no modification. All pickups are trucks and more rugged and capable SUVs are trucks by that definition, and of course vans and work specific vehicles are also considered trucks. Outside of that, everything else is a car, or at least that's how I was raised.

Too complicated for me. Even the definition does not sort it.
"Any of various forms of vehicle for carrying goods and materials, usually consisting of a single self-propelled unit but also often composed of a trailer vehicle hauled by a tractor unit".
I guess we define it as we see it.

Oh, you didn't mention that your sprog is of the female persuasion. In that case you're right, back the kid. Even marital strife isn't scarier than the wrath of a two year old female.

This clarification works really well I think. Maybe go so far as to say a separated cargo area.
This would rule out Land Cruisers and similar, which may or may not be proper but would be popular.
